You’ve booked the perfect venue, the guest list is stacked, and the party vibes are immaculate - but the clock hits midnight and it’s time to wrap up. Or is it? If you’re planning a private event, there’s a smart, legal way to keep the good times going: apply for a Temporary Event Notice (TEN).
What Is a Temporary Event Notice (TEN)?
A Temporary Event Notice is a licence issued by your local council that allows a venue to carry out licensable activities outside of their usual operating hours. For event organisers looking to host a party that runs late into the night, a TEN provides a temporary legal workaround to usual restrictions. This is particularly useful if: You’re hiring a private venue that normally closes early; You want to sell alcohol at a private event or you’re planning to bring in a DJ or live band and the venue doesn’t usually allow it.

How to Apply for a TEN
Typically this will be done by the venue you choose, however it's worth you knowing! Applying for a TEN is relatively straightforward: Submit a notice to your local council (minimum 5 working days in advance; ideally 10+); Include the event’s date, location, and activity details; Pay a small fee (usually £21); Await approval (most are granted if no objections are raised). Each individual can apply for up to 5 TENs per year, and venues with a personal licence can submit up to 50. The venue can apply online via their local council’s website. Just search Temporary Event Notice to find the right portal and use a keyword such as 'London' or whichever city you're hosting your event in..
Can Any Venue Use a TEN?
Most venues that allow private hire can benefit from a TEN - bars, restaurants, rooftops, halls, even outdoor spaces. The key is making sure the venue agrees and is happy to support your application. A TEN can extend trading hours, allow alcohol to be sold, and enable amplified music or performances - turning a standard hire into a full-on experience. This is especially powerful for: Birthday parties; Weddings; Corporate events and seasonal parties like NYE or Christmas.
